Mathias Mejeh

The field of education is experiencing a digital transformation. Dr. Mathias Mejeh sees this as an opportunity to explore how educational technology can facilitate timely and personalized supports for students’ self-regulating learning (SRL). Dr. Mejeh aims to promote self and co-regulated learning in schools and classrooms to make SRL more actionable for teachers, personalized for learners, and accessible to school communities. All the while challenging the notion that some learners cannot self-regulate.

“My research endeavors to dispel the misconception that creating learning environments conducive to self-regulated learning is inherently unfeasible due to perceived difficulties, resource constraints, or learner heterogeneity”— Dr. Mejeh

Promoting SRL and Inclusion through Educational Technology

Dr. Mejeh developed studybuddy, a digital tool that promotes SRL by providing students and teachers with immediate and informative feedback and encouraging active reflection around learning and teaching.

“I seek to merge comprehensive diagnosis of learners’ needs with impactful feedback mechanisms” — Dr. Mejeh

studybuddy helps teachers track student progress, plan lessons, identify areas where students may need support, and adjust their teaching practice. Meanwhile, students receive differentiated feedback, both formative and summative, to help them make decisions about how to direct their own learning process.

“If technologies like adaptive assistance systems are developed thoughtfully and collaboratively, they possess the potential to benefit all students, thereby enhancing teaching over time.”—Dr. Mejeh

Dr. Mejeh believes the field of educational technology has the potential to create more inclusive, personalized, and effective educational experiences for all learners. Hoping to highlight the importance of creating learning environments that foster SRL, he aims to showcase how, with adequate support and resources, all students can develop SRL skills to help them succeed.
